Solitude and community

The most loved activity on site is to chill – it takes skill, but the masters do it effortlessly. Practice makes perfect. The units are private and you can have a romantic experience or one of solitude. People come to Cederkloof to recover from exhaustion, and the tranquility, the birds, plants, will aid in your rejuvenation. The hiking trails can be done in solitude or with a group. For those even more adventurous, please see our list of recommendations below.

Activities on site:

There are two trails on the property that takes you to vistas over the Olifants River valley, the majestic Cederberg Mountains and the Sneeuberg Nature Conservancy that is covered in snow in winter.

Klein Olifants Route is a two-hour (3.6km) stroll up the kloof and over some hills. It brings you down to our Clanwilliam cedar restoration project where we have 28 of these toddlers that we are nursing through their first years. (The Cederberg were named after these trees. They are now virtually extinct after the furniture trade got hold of them around 1920. Thereafter multiple fires ravaged the remaining few.)

Feetjie Route is a 20-minute stroll halfway up the kloof before descending again along the length of the cottages. It is incredibly beautiful and meditative in the early mornings.

Don’t forget your water bottles! There are beautiful places along the route to enjoy the view, have a rest and a picnic.

We promise you the sun, moon and stars

The best place from which to watch the stars is to drag a bean bag to the lawn and sit back. There is very little or no light interference, only the magnificent night sky. We also watch the full moon rising from our rock perches as well as the magnificent sunsets.

Our recommendations

There is an array of outdoor activities in close proximity such as ancient Khoi and San rock paintings, waterfalls and deep fresh-water swimming pools, and horseback riding. Please see the recommendations page in the Room Manual for all recommended activities and places to visit.
